Religious Freedom under Siege: Why Zubik v. Burwell Matters

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for a case that could be the end of religious liberty as we know it. Zubik v. Burwell, the consolidated cases brought by Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh and the leaders of six other religious nonprofits, is not just about the Affordable Care Act or exemptions from providing birth control coverage—it represents a profoundly harmful interpretation of religious freedom.

A diverse coalition of groups dedicated to women’s rights, social justice, separation of church and state, reproductive rights and justice and LGBT rights are united in the belief that this Supreme Court case is vitally important to the future of our nation. They convened an insider briefing on everything you need to know about Zubik. The briefing featured Sara Hutchinson Ratcliffe of Catholics for Choice, Brigitte Amiri of the American Civil Liberties Union, Rev. Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Ann Marie Benitez of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health and Rea Carey of the National LGBTQ Task Force.
