Development Aid: What You Need to Know
To mark World AIDS Day, Catholics for Choice is highlighting the dark side of development aid. Faith-based organizations—particularly Catholic agencies, which the Vatican claims provide 30 percent of AIDS care in Africa and 25 percent of AIDS care globally—take taxpayer money to provide healthcare services to the neediest communities throughout the world, but sometimes pick and choose who to help and which services to offer.
Urge international development agencies to require transparency in healthcare provision. Faith-based healthcare providers should offer comprehensive, evidence-based services, not dogma.
Pope Francis Exposes His Blind Spot on Women
26 November 2013 - Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice, released a statement about Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Guadiam: “When it comes to women, we certainly agree that ‘demands that the legitimate rights of women be respected, based on the firm conviction that men and women are equal in dignity, present the Church with profound and challenging questions which cannot be lightly evaded.’ But evasion is exactly what Pope Francis does when he asserts that abortion and women’s ordination can be isolated from the economic and social justice issues that he purports to champion. Catholics Respond to Supreme Court Hearings
on Affordable Care Act
26 November 2013 - Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice, said of the announcement that the Supreme Court agreed hear two challenges to the Affordable Care Act, “The court’s decision in these cases could have far-reaching implications—not only for employees’ right to decide on the healthcare they need according to their own beliefs and not those of their employer. The final ruling could also have a severe impact upon an employee’s right to make any personal decision with which an employer may disagree: the choice to have an abortion, to become pregnant using in vitro fertilization, whether to cohabit, to marry a person of the same sex, to have a child as a single woman, to have a blood transfusion, to donate to stem-cell research or to be remarried after a divorce.” Read more.
Catholics Play Major Role in Defeat of Albuquerque Antiabortion Ballot Measure
Catholics in Albuquerque joined their neighbors, friends and fellow residents in defeating a ballot measure that would have banned abortion in the city after 20 weeks with no exceptions for rape, incest or the health of a pregnant woman. Catholics across the city spoke out in the weeks leading up to the vote, taking a stand to show support for women’s moral autonomy and their right to make conscience-based decisions about their own health and lives.
