Are Catholic bishops practicing discrimination?

Jon O'Brien

7 July 2015

Bishop Swain’s remark that “we don’t judge anyone ... judgment is to be left to God” is bogus (“Bishop: ‘We do not judge anyone,’” June 30). As the bishops continue their so-called “Fortnight for Freedom,” it’s clear that their idea of religious freedom is the freedom to discriminate against anyone who disagrees with them.

Bishops are lobbying for special exemptions from state and federal policies that would allow their business interests to fire a teacher at a Catholic school for marrying a same-sex partner; block an employee at a Catholic-affiliated hospital from getting birth control through her insurance; fire a woman who works at a Catholic diocese for using IVF to have a baby; and more.

This is textbook discrimination and judgment. We hope and pray the bishops will have a change of heart, but until they do, Catholics are not drinking the Kool-Aid.
